Excel Dashboard - Charts, Gauges, Tables and Drills, Reports

There are two ways to create Dashboards using Excel Data. One way is to create the tables and charts right in the Excel file using the Excel functionality and the other way is to connect to Excel file as if you are connecting to a Database and then create Charts, Tables and Drills to create a real Dashboard.

In this article we will discuss the steps to create a dashboard report using SQL queries. If you are not familiar with SQL query then you may use the Microsoft Query tool that is available within Excel, construct your Query and then click on the SQL button to get the query. Use this query to create charts and drills as illustrated below.

The benefits of this approach is that using this tool to build Dashboard allows you to merge information from different data sources in one dashboard page. For e.g if you need to bring in information from multiple Excel files, MS Access Database or Oracle, DB2, SQL Server, MySQL into one dashboard page, it is very easy to do so.

You can also drill from Excel file into information contained in your MS Access database and vice versa.
